Humor:
An idea I fail to understand.
Why do people lie
To try to be funny?
Lying is not funny.
It's mean
And very confusing.
People are hard to understand.
They say things
That they don't mean,
So why do they say them?
They don't speak the truth
And that is very rude.
People are not like numbers.
Numbers are easy,
So structured, so exact,
Not like what my teacher teaches me.
She tries to teach me body language.
I fail to understand body language.
I need pictures of emotions
In my pocket.
How else will I know
How someone feels?
Feelings are inside,
Not outside.
People make faces
To show emotion,
But I can't read faces.
I can read numbers.
Numbers don't have feelings.
Sometimes I feel like a number,
Not knowing how to feel.
Life confuses me.
It's not always the truth.
What do you think are the ramifications of this for us who read the book? I mean, I'm not autistic, so where does that leave me? What is Haddon trying to expose here, or at least shed light on for us to think about in a fresh, or new way?
ReplyDeleteLeah, this was really cool, since he can only read numbers, but has the hardest time with emotions. Do you think that the author is trying to show us that emotions can't be read like numbers, that we just tell ourselves we know how to read them? Because sometimes I think that somebody feels one way, but they end up thinking the exact opposite.
ReplyDeleteLeah, this is really good! This poem is really powerful! You made me think, yeah why aren't we like numbers? Nice Job!
ReplyDeleteLeah this was written very well. As an answer to Mr. J, I think that what Haddon is trying to display is that we aren't perfect. Even as healthy human beings we have a hard time interpreting emotion and reading people just as Christopher does. I think Haddon is just showing it in a more literal way. I'm not sure if that is correct but that's how I looked at it.
ReplyDeleteLeah, I love this poem! It sounds just like something Christopher would say/think. Good job :)
ReplyDeleteNice job Leah! This poem does a great job explaining what Christopher would think. I think this means that you are really understanding the novel! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI think he wants us to see ourselves through the eyes of someone who is unlike us, someone with a disability. The purpose is so we can learn something from the characters without actually experiencing it ourselves, so someone without autism can get a glimpse of what it might be like.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Leah! This sounds like something that Christopher would write and you really explained his emotions about how confusing people really are. Sorry if that sounded confusing but I think you know what I mean haha great job. :)
